Dogs are responsible for killing some 15,000 sheep in wolf-free Britain in 2016! (Click on the photo to get to the FarmingUK Website)

Protect your herd // Schütze Deine Herde // Protègez votre troupeau
For thousands of years did people and wolves co-exist. Farmers developed the know-how to reduce the number of wolf attacks on their flocks. It was obvious to them to have a shepherd and a dog! We see this already some 4,000 years ago(!) in the Gilgamesh Epos: shepherds and dogs drive away the wolf (link). And this pracrise continued of course in all the countries around the world where wolves had not been driven to extinction!
It is therefore mainly in some countries in western Europe and the U.S. where wolves are nowadays considered a problem! Having been extinct for several decades, some farmers often appear reluctant to invest in the protection of their own flock! It seems that some farmers even want wolves to kill sheep in order to advocate the large-scale culling of entire wolf families. |

Electric Fencing // E-Zäune // Clôtures électriques
Electric fencing is another efficient way to protect your livestock. But you need the right fence. There are numerous varieties that can easily cover several hectars of land. From a standard electric fence with several wires to a mesh electric fence. It is important that the fence has enough wires, a very low one, less than 20cm high, so that a wolf cannot pass underneath the fence, and a high one of some 140cm to make it difficult for a wolf to jump over it. Once a wolf has learned about electric fences, research has shown that they avoid them. But of course, one ought to regularly (i.e. daily!) maintain the electric fence and check that it is working!
