AD 1018
KAISERDOM ST. PETER | WORMS CATHEDRAL | CATHEDRALE DE WORMS
Standing on the foundations of the Roman 'forum' and the Merovingian cathedral (c.AD 600), the Romanesque cathedral (inaugurated in AD 1018 under bishop Burchard) has seen lots of events in the past 1,000 years from royal weddings, religious Councils and Diets, Papal Elections, and many more. This is also reflected in the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque art, and the altar to Neptune discovered in the Gothic St. Nicholas chapel. And if one looks more closely, one can discover quite a few medieval wall paintings.
And throughout the cathedral's 1,000 year history, the additions seem to blend into the Romanesque architecture... until we get to the 21st century |
