When the first railways were built in Germany, 'Germany' did not exist, but lots of small countries. The Hessian Railways was a private railway that operated in the Grand Durchy of Hessia whose capital city was Darmstadt; the other two larger cities were Worms and Mainz, both on the river Rhiine. The Hessian Railway was founded by shareholders to create a railway between Worms and Mainz. When the railway finally opened in 1853, the railway had connections via the Bavaian "Ludwigsbahn" to the French network, with connections from Worms and Mainz as far away as Paris and the ports on the Atlantic Ocean (imprtant for 19th-century emigration to the Americas).
