One of the oldest horse breeds in the world, going back to at least Roman times; for some going back as far as the prehistoric «Solutré horse».
Camargue horses are wild horses, only reaching adulthood at the age of 5 to 7 years, and over centuries perfectly adapted to thr rough humid, salty, windy and hot climate of the Camargue. Growing up semi-wild in a herd on huge pastures, they are extremely intelligent and absolutely beautiful. The horses are closely associated with local culture and tradition in the south of France - an integral part in the festivities and cultures of countless villages between the Rhône delta, Arles, Tarascon, Nîmes, Lunel and Montpellier. |

Camargue Horses, cattle, marshes and century-old traditions go hand-in-hand.

LE CAMARGUE | CHEVAL MYTHIQUE | MYTHICAL HORSES | MYTHOS CAMARGUEPFERD
The Camargue horse belongs to its 'cradle': it is perfectly adapted to the marshy Rhône delta, the salt water, the harsh climate - hot and windy -, the sparse vegetation that grows in the delta (salicornes and tamaris instead of grass...).
Horse and environment belong together, giving rise to countless myths and legends... and to scientific studies on the origin of horses in southern France. Just a few impressions of the amazing "Songe d'une Nuit en Camargue" (2017), telling a mythical story about horses & creations, myths & gods, water & fire. Just a couple of minutes. But if you have the opportunity, go there and experience it yourself: only one show per year!
