Fighting Fear and Ignorance...
Since 2000, wolves have gradually returned to Germany, having been extinct for many generations. The response has generally been positive, but there are increasing negative voices, fueled by certain politicians and the media. In 2015, I donated 500 euros to the zoo so that a large information panel can be provided to inform about wolves in Germany, and how to behave when you see one... I hope(d) that more activities would follow in the zoo... // What about a life-size figure of the "evil" Red Riding Hood for the zoo...?
some Pro-Wolf Children Books // ein paar wolf-freundliche Kinderbücher...

Das Wolfsgehege - The Enclosure
Landscapes Wolf Enclosure with lots of acivity zones: a lot in a small space... The wolf enclosure in the zoo "Tiergarten Worms" was comletely redone in 2007, several times larger than the original enclosure that dated from the 1970s. It now consists of several activity zones, dens, pond, feeding area, and many more. For visitors, there are four viewpoints that provide a clear view of the enclosure without any obstruction: the "underground zoo" with windows on the enclosure and one of the dens, a large glass panel that provides a view at the north-east corner, a viewing platform at the feeding area in the northßwest corner of the enclosure, and a ramp that looks over the west side of the enclosure. Although the enclosure is relatively large, it could (and should) be extended: a woodland area to the south could easily be integrated into the enclosure. |

Rudel = Familie
Pack = Family
There are five wolves - the brothers Bolek and Birger who came to the zoo in 2007 - and the cubs who were born here in 2009: Goldie, Kleiner and Whitey - all of them male. The "alpha female", excuse the term, and mother of the three cubs, Anouk, died a few years ago. And in September 2015, Birger unfortunately died as well, leaving only four wolves in the group. In 2010 the last cubs were born in the zoo: there were two litters, one by Anouk and one by one of her daughters, with altogether eight cubs. But all were given to other zoos and wolf parks. Afterwards, all the male wolves were castrated. The attempt to integrate a new female wolf, called Odina (from Osnabrück Zoo), failed: she died after just one month. |

"Schaufütterung" mit allen vier Wölfen am 29. Dezember 2015. Vielen Dank!
This was a nice event! Nice feeding with all four wolves on 29th Deember 2015. Also, a nice commentary from one of the keeper of the zoo's Eurasian section. Many thanks. Notice that "Kleiner" is this time the unlucky one and hardly gets any food... |
Fütterung an Weihnachten, 25. Dezember 2015.
Feeding the wolves on Christmas Day, 25th December 2015. Whitey, Bolek and Kleiner dominate the event. Goldie, our lowest ranking wolf, unfortunately leaves the feeding area very early. |
"Wolf Enrichment" am 3. Januar 2016. Tolles Erlebnis!
Enrichment for the wolves, 3rd January 2016. Three wolves are terrified of the mysterious boxes, while one wolf, the lowest ranking one, Goldie, finally gets really brave! A great experience! There will hopefully more enrichment for the wolves. (Long video! Fast forward when Goldie finally gets close to the enrichment boxes for the first time and starts opening one after the other...) |

Non-socialised wolves - Nicht-sozialisierte Wölfe
Since the wolves were not socialised as cubs, they are instinctively quite terrified of humans. The video from 25th December 2015 shows the wolves' reaction while two zookeepers clean the enclosure. As the keepers move around, the wolves keep their distance. The only brave wolf is Goldie who is more used to humans (similar to Birger) since he is sometimes fed separately when he is bullied by his fellow pack members. |
