Horse Burials // Pferdebestattungen // Tombeaux pour Chevaux
In many societies, horses receive a special treatment, different from cattle, sheep or pigs. They often were not butchere, though we do find horse sacrifices. But the body is usually left intact. In the photo below,we see an exceptional burial of 8 horses and 8 humans from RomanGaul.
See for example: Patrice Méniel, Rose-Marie Arbogast, Sébastien Lepetz, Benoît Clavel, Jean- Hervé Yvinec. Archéologie du cheval. Errance, 2002, Esperides. ⟨halshs-00091187⟩
Another unusual case was recently discovered at Meonstoke. Below a Romano-Celtic hexagonal temple, a mare and her foal had been buried, prior to the construction of the stone temple.Horse and foal may remind us of the Celtic goddess Epona and the myth of Rhiannon in the Mabinogi.
For Meonstoke excavations, see e.g. Winchester Uni Project Page, or Interim Report 2016-2017 on academia.edu,
