My interest for the old trams in my homecity was first raised when I saw my grandmother's photos of the 1956 closure of the trams // Mein Interesse an der Wormser Straßenbahn kommt von einer Sammlung von Photographien von der Abschiedsfahrt 1956 aus der Sammlung meiner Großmutter.

Overview
Video / PowerPoint on the history of the tramway and buses of the city of Worms // Video Präsentation über die Geschichte der Elektischen und der frühen Omnibusse in Worms 1906-1956... Enjoy!
The municipal tramway in Germany's oldest city only existed from 1906 to 1956. The city council was undecisive to allow private companies to build a horse tram. Only in 1906 did the city create its own electric tram, connecting all major parts of the city at that time, usually at a 7 1/2 minute interval. Plans to expand the network were halted by the First World War. After the war, the city focussed on social housing; even a small extension along the Erenburger Strasse took years to complete as the city had no money... The original trams continued to operate until the network's closure in 1956. In the 50's, large financial investments in the tram's infrastructure would have been necessary. The option of trolley buses was also considered, but the city council decided to invest in buses instead. The last reminder of the trams, the depot, continued to be used as a bus depot for many years, but it also has vanished more than 20 years ago.
