The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) is responsible for organising the breeding of animals threatended by extinction, like the lycaon pictus. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) (a UN Environment Programme convention) is working to protect migratory animals. The African Carnivore Initiative (ACI) of the CMS and CITES aims to protect the population of four key carnivores in Africa: lion, cheetah, leopard and the African wild dog, classified as critically endangered.
