A short curriculum vitae...
I am a historian and archaeologist specialising on the Iron Age and Roman periods. I was awarded the doctorate at University College London in 1997 and I worked as a lecturer at various higher education institution in Britain and Germany.
My expertise is rather varied. Here are just some of my major research interests (see also my research page):
  • The ancient worrld, esp. the history and archaeology of Iron Age Europe and of Italy and the provinces of the Roman empire. For example on Iron Age ('Celtic') art and iconography.
  • Ancient religions and polytheistic religions in general, especially Celtic, Roman and Greek religions and religious interactions and religious change in the ancient world. Special focus also on the sacred Landscapes in the ancient world in a comparative view.
  • Globalisation in the ancient world: questions of identity, cultural development, 'trade', etc.
  • Prehistoric writing, Roman inscriptions, ancient prosopography, and question of literacy in the ancient world.
  • Social and collective memory in the Roman world
  • Ancient languages, like Latin and evidence for various ancient Celtic languages.

#Lampeter University from 1822 Border Collie DJ @UWTSD
My Border Collie, "DJ" , and I on the Lampeter campus. Lampeter is Wales' oldest university, founded in 1822!
Until 31st July 2019, I was senior lecturer (Associate Professor) in Roman History and Archaeology in Lampeter (UWTSD). I have been teaching undergraduates and postgraduates, on-campus and distance learners, in a wide range of subjects, combining ancient history and archaeology with theoretical, sociological and anthropological approaches. Topics include Roman history, Roman Britain, Exploring Sustainability, Ancient Celtic Civilisations, Ancient Religions, Religious Life in the Roman Provinces, Advanced Latin, Introducing Archaeology, What makes civilisation?, Regional History, Archaeology, Heritage, Theory & Methodology for the Study of Ancient Religions, and many more.

I have also been programme director, notably for the MA Ancient Religions, turning it into a truly multi-disciplinary programme. In 2014 I organised two three-day conferences in Lampeter, on Sacred Landscapes (May 2014) and Romano-Celtic religion(s) (October 2014), followed by a one-day session on Near Eastern Sacred Landscapes (Jan 2016) and a three-day conference on Re-thinking Globalisation in the Ancient World (2018). I've also been responsible for organising the Classics Research Seminars, the lecture series of the Lampeter and West Wales Branch of the Classical Association, as well as the Classics Summer School on Lepontic and Venetic languages in N Italy.
